On Nov 24 1973, a US Navy aeroplane (  a Douglas Super DC-3 ) - was forced to crash land on Sólheimasandur beach in Iceland. Amazingly the crew all survived the impact, but the plane was abandoned rather than recovered - and lies there still today. It has become a tourist destination in its own right now but is not really marked on any maps but with a bit of research, its easily found.
